김상길(b.1974)은 반복적인 일상의 순간이나 사물의 특정 부분에 지속적인 관찰의 시선을 던지며 익숙한 삶의 이미지들을 기이하고 낯선 풍경으로 대치시켜 왔다. 영화 혹은 광고 속 이미지들을 재연한 '모션 픽처' 연작, 인터넷 동호회 회원들을 오프라인 공간에 초대하여 단체사진으로 촬영한 '오프라인 커뮤니티' 연작, 텅빈 사무실, 인적이 없는 주차장과 같이 본래의 기능을 상실한 공간을 담아낸 're-mode-1' 연작 등 그의 작품은 인물, 풍경, 다큐멘터리, 온라인 이미지 등 사진의 거의 모든 영역을 넘나들며 현대인으로 하여금 동질화된 생활 속에서 극적인 아름다움을 발견하게 한다. 작가는 주요 전시를 암스테르담 드 아펠 아트센터, 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 삼성미술관 리움, 일민미술관 등에서 개최했으며, 광주 비엔날레(2010, 2003), 상하이 비엔날레(2008) 등 유수의 국제미술행사에 참여했다. 2006년 에르메스 코리아 미술상 최종후보로 선정된 바 있다. 현재 미술가이자 기획자, 강연자, 저술가로 활동하고 있다.
Sanggil Kim(b.1974) substitutes familiar images to unusual and strange images through observing repeating moments in everyday life and particular parts of objects. His artworks include Motion Picture series, a reproduction of images from movies and advertisements, Offline Communities series, group photos of online community members, and re-mode-1 series, photos of spaces such as vacant offices or empty parking lots that had lost its original purpose. Kim aspires to find theatrical aesthetics in the homogenized contemporary world through portraiture, landscape, documentary, and online image. Kim has held major exhibitions at De Appel (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Leeum Samsung Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Ilmin Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), and has participated in international art fairs including 2003 and 2010 Gwangju Biennale, and 2008 Shanghai Biennale. Kim was listed as a finalist of the Hermès Korea Missulsang in 2006. Sanggil Kim has been working actively as an artist, organizer, lecturer, and author.
