뮌헨 태생의 토마스 데만트(b.1964)는 미디어에서 접한 공간의 이미지들을 색종이와 판지를 이용하여 실물 크기의 모형으로 제작한 후, 이를 촬영하고 파괴하는 일련의 설치와 사진, 영상 작업으로 실재와 가상의 경계가 모호해진 현대사회 내 재현의 이슈에 대하여 탐구한다. 그의 작업은 '현실의 충실한 재현'이라는 고전 미술의 관념을 전복하는 동시에 현대 사진의 교묘한 조작과 허구성을 폭로한다. 토마스 데만트는 뉴욕 현대미술관, 베를린 신국립미술관, 아일랜드 현대미술관, 파리 까르띠에 현대미술재단, 베니스 프라다 파운데이션 등 세계 최정상급 미술관에서 단독 작품전을 개최했으며, 솔로몬 R. 구겐하임미술관, 테이트 모던 컬렉션 등에 그의 작품이 영구 소장되어 있다. 현재 함부르크 국립조형예술대학교의 조각 전공 교수로 재직 중이다.
Thomas Demand(b.1964), born in Munich, creates life-sized models from colored paper and cardboard, based from images of different spaces he encountered in the media. He then takes photos of the models and destroys them. Through his installation, photography, and video work, all of which entail such a method of production, Demand investigates the issues regarding reproduction within the contemporary society where the boundary between actuality and imagination is ambiguous. Demand’s works undermine the traditional notion of photography as a ‘faithful record of reality’ and reveal the manipulative and fabricated nature of contemporary photographs. Demand’s works have been the subject of one-person exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA), Neue Nationalgalerie (Berlin, Germany), Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin, Ireland), Fondation Cartier pour l'art Contemporain (Paris, France), and Fondazione Prada (Venice, Italy). International art institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, USA), and Tate Modern (London, UK) have acquired the artist’s artworks. Demand is currently a professor at the HFBK University of Fine Arts, Hamburg in the department of sculpture.
