이불(b.1964)은 날카로운 사회비판과 역사의식, 유토피아에 관한 인본주의적 탐구 속에 개인적 내러 티브를 투영시킨 작업들로 1980년대 후반부터 현대미술계를 선도하는 한국 대표작가로 자리매김 해왔다. 강렬하고 파격적인 그의 작업은 퍼포먼스, 조각, 설치, 회화, 드로잉, 그리고 영상에 이르기까지 여러 매체로 시각화 된다. 작가는 뉴욕 현대미술관, 뉴뮤지엄, 솔로몬 R. 구겐하임 미술관, 무담 룩셈부르크, 런던 헤이워드 갤러리 등 세계 최정상급 미술기관에서 개인전을 가졌다. 2012년 아시아 여성작가 최초로 도쿄 모리 미술관에서 대규모 회고전을 개최했으며, 베니스 비엔날레 본 전시에 한국작가로는 유일하게 두 차례 초청되어 (1999, 2019) 동시대 최고작가로서의 위용을 증명하였다. 이불은 1998년 휴고보스상 최종후보, 1999년 베니스비엔날레 특별상, 2014 년 광주비엔날레 눈예술상, 2019년 호암상 예술상 수상자로 선정된 바 있다. 그의 작품은 삼성 리움미술관, 아트선재센터, 가나자와 21세기 현대 미술관, 로스앤젤레스 현대미술관 등에 소장되어 있다.
A prominent figure in Korea’s contemporary art scene since the late 1980s, Lee Bul(b.1964) has been consistently infusing personal narratives to her works about social criticism, historical issues, and humanistic exploration of utopia. Lee creates powerful and unconventional works across diverse mediums including performance, sculpture, installation, drawing and video. Lee has held solo exhibitions at world’s leading art institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA), New Museum (New York, USA), Guggenheim Museum (New York, USA), Mudam Luxembourg (Luxembourg City, Luxembourg), and Hayward Gallery (London, England). In 2012, Lee Bul had a large retrospective at Mori Art Museum, Tokyo as the first Asian female artist and is the only Korean artist who has been invited to participate at Venice Biennale's main exhibition twice in 1999 and 2019, proving her stature as a leading figure in contemporary artist. Lee Bul was selected as a finalist for the 1998 Hugo Boss Prize, awarded an honorable mention at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999, received Noon Art Prize at the 10th Gwangju Biennale in 2014, and was the winner of the 2019 Ho-Am Prize for the Arts. Her works are included in the collections of major art institutions such as the Leeum Samsung Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Art Sonje Center (Seoul, Korea), 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (Kanazawa, Tokyo), and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (Los Angeles).
