스톡홀름에서 거주 및 활동 중인 카스텐 홀러(b.1961)는 과학자로서 그가 받은 훈련을 예술의 영역에 적용한 다수의 대규모 인터랙티브 작업들을 통해 오늘날 가장 영향력 있는 아티스트로 손꼽혀 왔다. 회전목마에서 거꾸로 된 고글에 이르기까지 그의 유쾌하면서도 냉소적인 실험들은 인간의 무뎌진 감각과 인식 체계를 뒤흔들며 주변 세계를 완전히 새롭게 인지할 수 있게 한다. 홀러는 2006년 런던 테이트 모던 터바인 홀에 설치한 미끄럼틀 작품 <Test Site>로 관람자의 직접적인 참여와 상호 작용을 이끌어내면서 설치미술의 새로운 장을 열었다. 뉴욕 뉴뮤지엄, 밀라노 프라다 재단, 디종 르 콩소르시엄, 멕시코시티 타마요 현대 미술관 등에서 개인전을, 파리 퐁피두 센터, 뉴욕 구겐하임 미술관, 도쿄 모리미술관 등에서 단체전을 개최했으며, 제50회(2003년), 제51회(2005년) 베스 비엔날레와 제8회(2010년), 제10회(2014년) 광주 비엔날레에 참여하며 국제적인 작가로서의 명성을 다졌다.
Carsten Höller(b.1961), who lives and works in Stockholm, is one of the most influential artists, known for his massive interactive installations that employ his background knowledge he learned as a scientist. From carousel to up-side-down goggles, Höller’s works are of amusing and cynical experiments that question the cognitive system in order to newly reflect our surroundings. In 2006, Höller attracted audiences' active participation and engagement with his installation work, Test Site—a five-slide installation at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall—and opened up a new paradigm in installation art. Höller has held solo exhibitions in prominent art institutions around the world including New Museum (New York, USA), Fondazione Prada (Milan, Italy), Le Consortium (Dijon, France), and Museo Tamayo (Mexico City, Mexico). He also participated in various group exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou (Paris, France), Guggenheim Museum (New York, USA), and Mori Art Museum (Tokyo, Japan). He earned his fame by participating in the 50th and 51st Venice Biennale of 2003 and 2005, and the 10th Gwangju Biennale in 2014.
