배영환(b.1969)은 조각, 회화, 사진, 영상, 설치 작업은 물론 사회 참여적 공공미술, 영화 시나리오 등 매체와 분야를 망라하는 다양한 작업활동을 통해 세계미술계가 주목하는 아시아 작가 중 한 명으로 주요 발언을 이어왔다. 그는 대중적인 키워드를 활용하여 일상과 미술의 소통을 가능하게 하고, 한국 사회문화의 감성과 사상들 간의 공모(共謀)를 통하여 현대인의 희노애락과 삶의 애환을 풀어낸다. 초기 대표작인 <유행가> 연작은 1980-90 년대의 가요를 알약, 깨진 술병 조각들로 적어 내려가며 한국 사회의 시대상과 감수성을 표현한 작품이며, 이후 <남자의 길>, <바보들의 배>, <불면증>에 이르는 작업들로 작가는 획일화된 사회로부터 소외된 것들에 관해 이야기했다. 공공미술 프로젝트인 <노숙자 수첩-거리에서>, <도서관 프로젝트> 등은 예술의 사회적 실천이 과연 어디까지 가능한가에 관한 희망적 답안이 되어왔다. 배영환은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 아트선재센터, 삼성미술관 플라토, 뉴욕 뉴뮤지엄, 도쿄 모리미술관, 상하이 민생미술관 등 전세계 미술기관에서 전시를 개최했으며, 광주 비엔날레, 샤르자 비엔날레, 베니스 비엔날레 한국관 등 유수의 단체전에 참여했다. 광주비엔날레 현장상, 오늘의 젊은 예술가상, 대한민국 공공디자인대상 최우수상을 수상하고 에르메스 코리아 미술상 최종 후보, APB시그니처 예술대상 최종 후보에 오른 바 있다.
Bae Young-whan(b.1969) has garnared attention of the international art world for his variety of works which include sculpture, painting, photography, video, installation work, public art, and movie scenarios. Bae connects art and everyday life with widely used keywords to present feelings of joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure of the people nowadays through Korean sociocultural sentiments and beliefs. In Pop Song series, one of his early works, Bae wrote down lyrics of K-pop songs from the ‘80s and ‘90s with pills and shards of glass to reflect the sentiments and times of Korean society. In the Way of Man, Ship of Fools, Insomnia, Bae touches upon the marginalized subjects of the standardized society. Bae’s public art projects such as Pocketbook for Homeless or Library Project have become optimistic markers of art's influence on society. Bae’s works have been shown worldwide at institutions including National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul, Korea), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Art Sonje Center (Seoul, Korea), PLATEAU, Samsung Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), New Museum (New York, USA), Mori Art Museum (Tokyo, Japan), and Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum (Shanghai, China). He participated in various group exhibitions at Gwangju Biennale, Sharjah Biennale, and the Korean pavilion at Venice Biennale. He received Gwangju Biennale Site Award, Today’s Young Artist Award, and Public Design Awards. Bae was selected as a finalist of the Hermes Korea art prize, and the Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) Foundation Signature Art prize.
