PKM 갤러리는 한국 단색화의 거목 故윤형근 화백 1928-2007 이 생전에 화첩, 메모첩, 서신 등에 남긴 소박한 기록들을 엮은 단행본 『윤형근의 기록』 (PKM BOOKS, 2021)의 출판을 기념하는 특별전을 개최한다. 윤 화백의 평소 생각과 생활 속의 감정들이 솔직담백하게 드러나는 『윤형근의 기록』이 더욱 울림 있게 대중에게 다가서기를 희망하며 기획된 본 전시에서는 단행본과 연관하는 미공개 드로잉 수십여 점과 초기작을 포함한 주요 회화, 편지·수첩·사진 등의 엄선된 아카이브 자료들이 일반에 최초로 소개된다.
윤형근 화백은 일제강점기, 6·25 전쟁, 유신정권 등 근현대사의 격동기를 정면으로 마주하며 생겨난 심정을 하늘을 뜻하는 ‘청색(Ultramarine)’과 흙의 빛깔인 ‘다색(Umber)’의 안료를 혼합하여 깊은 농도로 화폭에 풀어내었다. 그가 표백 처리를 하지 않은 마포나 면천 위에 스미게 한 물감의 자연스러운 번짐 효과는 추사 김정희(1786-1856)의 서체 또는 옛 수묵화와 비견되며, 윤 화백의 선비와 같은 인품을 오롯이 내보인다. “인간적인 척도가 곧 예술의 척도”(1977.2.15) 라고 언급하면서 내면의 성찰을 게을리 하지 않고 삶의 자세와 예술 행위를 일치시키고자 한 윤형근의 고매한 인생 철학은 작품뿐 아니라 그가 남긴 글에도 고스란히 드러나고 있다.
『윤형근의 기록』 은 PKM 갤러리가 2년 여간 윤형근의 서교동 작업실에서 수집하고 판독해 온 글 300여 점을 중심으로 구성되었다. 1977 년에 선포된 ‘천지문(千字文: BLUE 는 하늘이요, UMBER 는 땅의 빛깔이다. 그래서 천지(天地)라 했고 구도는 문(門)이다.)’ 개념에서부터 작업 중간중간에 남긴 고뇌의 흔적, 동료 예술가들과의 외국 여행담, 아버지라고 불렀던 장인 김환기 화백과의 추억, 아내와 아들에게 쓴 정다운 편지까지, 잔존하는 그의 기록들이 사진 및 드로잉북의 에스키스들과 연계하여 단행본에 수록된다. 더불어, 아들 윤성열과 윤 화백의 오랜 벗이었던 최종태 조각가, 국립현대미술관 윤범모 관장의 에세이를 함께 실음으로써 윤형근 고유의 서사를 보다 다양한 각도에서 살펴보고자 하였다.
『윤형근의 기록』 은 PKM 갤러리에서 새롭게 출범한 PKM BOOKS 에서 발간하는 첫 번째 책이다. 또한 본 단행본의 출간에 맞추어 소장가치가 높은 아트 패키지가 198 개의 한정판 에디션으로 출시될 예정이다. 아트 패키지는 『윤형근의 기록』 1 권과 윤 화백이 생전에 남긴 메모첩 중 3 점을 재현한 실물 복각판, 회화 작업 이미지로 제작된 최고급 아트 프린트 1 종으로 이루어져 있다. 그 견본을 특별전에 전시하여 관람객이 해당 구성을 직접 확인할 수 있게 하였다. 본 패키지는 윤형근의 흔적을 간직하려는 컬렉터들에게 작품 소장과는 다른 의미와 감동을 줄 것이다. 특별전의 기간 동안 갤러리는 매주 화요일부터 일요일까지 개관한다.
윤형근 화백은 서울 국립현대미술관(MMCA, Seoul), 베니스 포투니 미술관(Palazzo Fortuny, Venice), 뉴욕 도널드 저드 재단(Donald Judd Foundation, New York), 로이틀링겐 미술관(Stiftung für Konkrete Kunst, Reutlingen), 등 전세계 굴지의 미술관에서 개인전을 가졌으며, 내년 8 월까지 계속되는 윤형근 특별전이 마파 치나티 재단(The Chinati Foundation, Marfa)에서 개최 중에 있다. 그는 상파울루 비엔날레(1969, 1975), 베니스 비엔날레 첫 번째 한국관 전시(1995), 광주 비엔날레(2000)를 비롯하여 테이트 리버풀(Tate Gallery, Liverpool), 도쿄 센트럴미술관(Tokyo Central Art Museum, Tokyo)등에서 열린 280 여 회의 단체전에 참여했다. 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관(Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul), 삼성미술관 리움(Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul), 도쿄도미술관(Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Tokyo), 홍콩 M+ 미술관(M+ Museum, Hong Kong), 시카고 아트인스티튜트(Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago), 런던 테이트 모던(Tate Modern, London), 등 국내외 유수의 미술 기관에서 윤형근의 작품을 영구 소장 중이다.

PKM Gallery is pleased to present a special exhibition celebrating the publication of Memories of Yun Hyong-keun (PKM BOOKS, 2021), which is a compilation of notes left in drawing books, notepads, and letters by Yun Hyong-keun(1928-2007), the master of Dansaekhwa. The exhibition features a careful selection of Yun’s paintings including early works and his drawings, together with related archival materials such as letters, diaries, photographs which are on public view for the first time. Altogether, the exhibition aims to fully introduce the Memories of Yun Hyong-keun which shows honest records of Yun’s daily thoughts and feelings.
Yun Hyong-keun uses a concentrated mixture of ultramarine and umber paints to express his state of mind emerged as he went through Korea’s turbulent modern history from Japanese colonial rule, Korean War to the Yushin Regime. The natural smearing effect of paint on linen or cotton canvas is comparable with Chusa Kim Jeong-hui’s(1786-1856) calligraphy and Korean ink paintings, and thus encapsulates Yun’s noble and scholarly personality. Yun, having stated that “criteria that makes a person is also what makes an artist(1977.2.15),” ceaselessly reflected on himself to parallel art and his life. Yun’s noble philosophy of life is mirrored not only in his artworks but also in his writings.
Memories of Yun Hyong-keun is comprised of more than 300 texts gathered and interpreted by PKM Gallery for more than 2 years at Yun’s studio in Seogyo-dong, Seoul. Such texts include notes on notions of Cheonjimun (The Gate of Heaven and Earth, BLUE is heaven, UMBER is the color of the earth. So that’s heaven and earth, and the gate is the composition) that was declared in 1977, notes showing his contemplation on art, accounts of trips with his peers, recollections of the times with his father-in-law Kim Whanki whom Yun called “father”, and caring letters to his son and wife. The texts are included in the book together with Yun’s photographs and esquisses from drawing books. Furthermore, essays by Yun’s son Yun Seong-ryeol, Yun’s old friend sculptor Choi Jong Tae, and MMCA director Yun Bum-mo are included in the publication, allowing a comprehensive overview of the Yun Hyong-keun’s life through various points of view.
Memories of Yun Hyong-keun is the first book to be published from newly established PKM BOOKS. Art package in a limited edition of 198 will be released with the book. The package includes 1 copy of Memories of Yun Hyong-keun, 3 reproduced Yun’s notepads, 1 of three types of high-quality art print of his painting. The contents of the package will be on display at the gallery for the audience to be able see its components. We hope the package delivers a new meaning and impression to art collectors who hope to cherish the traces of Yun. During the exhibition, the gallery will be open from Tuesday to Sunday.
Yun Hyong-keun has held solo exhibitions at major art institutions around the world such as the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), Palazzo Fortuny (Venice), Donald Judd Foundation (New York), Stiftung für Konkrete Kunst (Reutlingen). Currently, the Chinati Foundation (Marfa) is holding Yun’s special exhibition which will be on display until August 2022. His works have been displayed in more than 280 group exhibitions including the Sao Paulo Biennale (1969, 1975), the inaugural exhibition of Korean pavilion at Venice Biennale (1995), Gwangju Biennale (2000), Tate Gallery (Liverpool), and Tokyo Central Art Museum (Tokyo). Yun’s works are included in the permanent collections of internationally renowned art institutions including Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul), Leeum Samsung Museum of Art (Seoul), Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (Tokyo), M+ (Hong Kong), Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago), and Tate Modern (London).
