피케이엠 트리니티 갤러리는 2009년 10월 9일부터 11월 30일까지 동시대 미술의 중심에서 그 흐름을 주도하고 있는 올라퍼 엘리아슨(1967년생)의 개인전 《Is the sky part of a landscape》을 개최한다.
코펜하겐에서 태어나 덴마크 왕립 미술학교에서 수학한 올라퍼 엘리아슨은 일찍이 북유럽의 신비로운 대자연의 풍광에 매료되어 그 경이로움과 아름다움을 작업의 주제로 삼아왔으며, 빛, 물, 안개, 얼음, 온도 등 자연현상의 요소를 과학적인 원리와 고안을 통해 현대 미술로 승화시키는 획기적인 시도로 국제적인 명성을 획득했다. 1995년 베를린에 대규모 스튜디오를 설립, 다양한 건축가, 과학자, 테크니션들과의 본격적인 협업의 기반을 마련한 엘리아슨은 각종 기계 장치를 사용한 대규모 자연 재현 프로젝트을 통해 명실공히 유사 자연(artificial nature) 창조의 거장으로 자리매김했다.
작가는 과학과 현대 기술에 대한 심도 있는 이해를 바탕으로 자연의 일부와 현상을 실내 및 특정 공간에 재현함으로써 관객들로 하여금 문명과 자연의 조우 속에서 색다른 경이로움과 감동을 경험하게 한다. 이처럼 관람객의 참여(involvement)와 일시성(temporality)이 중요한 요소로 작용하는 올라퍼 엘리아슨의 작업은 미니멀리즘, 개념 미술, 대지 미술, 공공 미술, 미디어 아트 등 동시대 미술의 주요 경향들이 반영되어 있다.
올라퍼 엘리아슨은 2003년 베니스 비엔날레 덴마크관 작가로 선정되었고, 같은 해 런던 테이트 모던의 터빈홀에 초대형 인공 태양을 이용해 설치한 '날씨 프로젝트'가 200만 명의 관람객 수를 기록하며 국제적인 명성을 획득하였다. 또한 2007년부터 2008년까지 샌프란시스코 현대 미술관, 뉴욕 현대 미술관, PS1 현대 미술 센터, 달라스 미술관으로 이어지는 대규모 순회전을 통해 다시금 그의 영향력을 입증하였다. 루이비통(2006)과 벤츠(2007) 매장을 위한 상업적 아트 프로젝트를 진행하는가 하면 뉴욕의 '이스트 강'을 따라 설치된 초대형 인공폭포 "뉴욕시 폭포" 프로젝트(2008) 등 공공 미술 작업을 통해 높은 대중적 인지도와 작품성을 동시에 획득하는 작업을 보여주었고, 현재 시카고 현대 미술관, 시드니 현대 미술관 순회전 및 일본 가나자와 21세기 현대 미술관 개인전 등 다양한 프로젝트를 준비하고 있다.
2007년 피케이엠갤러리 개인전에 이어 2번째로 열리는 이번 한국에서의 개인전은 그 규모와 범위를 확장해 올라퍼 엘리아슨 작업의 정수를 보여줄 예정이다. 캔버스 위에 가시광선의 스펙트럼을 표현한 대형 유화 작품을 비롯, 프리즘의 굴절과 물의 반사 작용을 통해 빛의 오로라를 만들어 내는 설치 작품과 수십 개의 원색 형광등 빛이 인공 안개로 가득 찬 공간을 색채의 실험장으로 변모시키는 작품 및 사진 작업 등 빛과 공간, 색채를 주제로 한 10여 점의 주요 작업들이 피케이엠 트리니티 갤러리의 넓은 공간 속에 펼쳐진다. 이번 전시 오프닝 참석을 위해 작가가 직접 방한할 예정이다.
P K M TRINITY GALLERY is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by the internationally acclaimed artist Olafur Eliasson. "Is the sky part of a landscape," his second solo exhibition in Korea after his first show with P K M GALLERY in 2007, features works in a wide range of scale and media, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, and large installations.
In his new works, he continues the strategy of employing basic elements appropriated from nature. Eliasson's portrayal of nature may seem in some ways to take after the Romantic tradition, which holds nature as an object of aesthetic contemplation and awe. Encountering his works, however, viewers are completely overtaken by sensory effects produced by processes and mechanisms that are laid bare. And in this manner, Eliasson's work departs from an idealized conception of nature and leads viewers to locate themselves within the present, to become conscious of the interconnection between individuals and their surroundings. In their journey through the exhibition, undergoing diverse sensory experiences that have been precisely calibrated by the artist, viewers will find themselves fully engaged with the space, physically and cerebrally, so that they may ponder the questions posed by the artist, such as how we use our senses; whether our actions have consequences; whether we feel a part of this world; and whether the sky is indeed part of our landscape.
Olafur Eliasson, born in 1967, Copenhagen, Denmark, is currently based in Berlin, where he has established Studio Olafur Eliasson, a laboratory for spatial experiments. His works have been the subject of numerous exhibitions worldwide and he has produced a number of projects in the public sphere, most recently the "New York City Waterfalls" in 2008. Recently, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art organized his first comprehensive survey in the U.S., "Take your time: Olafur Eliasson," which along others travelled to the Museum of Modern Art, P.S.1. Contemporary Art Center, New York and continues to MCA Sydney in December. This winter he will have another solo show "Your chance encounter" at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.
