PKM 트리니티 갤러리는 2010년 5월 6일부터 6월 4일까지 맨드라미 작가로 알려진 중견작가 김지원의 개인전을 개최한다.
작가 김지원은 자신만의 색깔로 회화 본질에의 줄기찬 탐구를 계속해 왔으며, 맨드라미의 열정적인 삶을 그림 속 인생철학으로 승화시키는 작가이다. 인하대 미술교육과와 독일 프랑크푸르트 국립조형 미술학교를 졸업한 이후 꾸준한 작업으로 회화의 진정성을 추구해온 작가 김지원은 현재는 한국예술종합학교 조형예술학과 교수로 재직 중이다.
이번 개인전은 작가의 대표적인 <맨드라미>와 <항공모함>, <이륙하다>의 연작을 중심으로 구성된, 2007년 이후부터 미발표 신작까지의 회화 14점과 내적 성찰의 과정을 심화시켜주는 연결고리인 드로잉 30여 점을 선보인다.
작가의 작업실 앞마당에서 수북이 자라고 있는 맨드라미의 생성과 탐스러운 성장, 그리고 격렬히 소멸하는 모습을 담은 그의 <맨드라미>는 맨드라미에 대한 그의 지독한 충실함을 보여주는 대표적인 정물 연작으로, 전통적인 회화적 관찰과 재현적 표현을 넘어선 회화 자신의 내면의 세계로 들어가는 내적 성찰과 표출의 과정을 보여준다. 2007년부터 진행해온 <항공모함>과 <이륙하다> 연작은 <맨드라미>와 함께 강렬하고도 더 나은 이상향을 향한, 그리고 세상의 모든 지리멸렬한 부조리들을 날려버리고자 하는 인간의 욕망과 삶의 희로애락을 담고 있다. 회화와 늘 병행해 온 드로잉 속에서 작가는 일상 공간의 태도를 형성한다.
근 몇십 년 동안 새롭게 부상한 뉴미디어 아트의 흐름 속에서 회화의 복귀와 후퇴가 반복되었지만, 이러한 변화에 흔들리지 않고 오로지 회화에 충실해 온 작가 김지원의 이번 개인전은 시간이 더할수록 원숙해져 가는 회화의 깊은 참맛을 느끼게 해주는 기회가 될 것이다.
PKM Trinity Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new works of Kim Jiwon, celebrated for his serial works on cockscomb flowers, called Mendrami in Korean.
Kim Jiwon works mainly through the medium of painting for personal expression, which is evident in the artist's works representing the meticulous study of the passionate lives of cockscombs. The artist has studied painting at Inha University and Germany's Frankfurt School of Art and currently teaches art at Korea's School of Art.
The current exhibition marks the debut of works that have not been made public since 2007 and includes 21 paintings and 40 drawings representative of the artist's style. The exhibition will focus on the artist's serial works of 'Mendrami', 'Aircraft carriers' and 'Take off'.
Kim's 'Mendrami' series, inspired by the contradictory qualities of the flowers found growing bountifully in the garden of the artist's studio countered by the severity of their decease, combines empirical study with the artist's reflection on the incongruous qualities of the world to express Kim's personal thoughts on the world order. The serial oeuvres of 'Aircraft carriers' and 'Take off', which Kim started working on since 2007, as well as those on cockscombs, represent the chaotic and disruptive nature of current society and the human desire to uproot disorder. Through his drawings and paintings of everyday objects, the artist conveys various characteristics of himself and instills a sense of self-reflection in order to view the world through a new mindset.
Although the rise of new mediums in art has been fickle with the traditional art of painting, Kim Jiwon conveys a deep sense of genuineness of the artist's through his faithfulness towards painting.
