PKM 갤러리는 2016년 5월 20일부터 6월 25일까지 ‘맨드라미 작가’로 널리 알려진 김지원(b.1961)의 작품전을 개최한다. 본 전시에는 주요 대작과 소품, 다양한 드로잉 작업에 이르기까지 작가의 무르익은 화력이 돋보이는 회화 작품들이 대거 출품된다. 특히 이번 개인전은 작가가 15년 이상 오래도록 천착해 온 주제인 <맨드라미>에 주목하는 전시로, 미발표 신작 총 26여 점을 엄선함으로써 작가의 작품세계를 심도 있게 보여주는 뜻깊은 자리가 될 것이다.
작가 김지원은 지난 30여 년간 '그리기'라는 미적 행위의 탐구에서 비롯된 작가 고유의 회화 언어를 통해 인간 욕망에 대한 예술적 성찰을 지속해왔다. 작가는 대상에 깊이 몰입하여 일상성과 상징성이 교차하는 가운데 떠오르는 잠재적 이미지들을 화면 위로 끌어올려 표출시킨다.
작가의 여러 연작 중에서도 단연 돋보이는 <맨드라미> 시리즈는 흔하지만 그리 예쁘지는 않은 맨드라미 꽃이라는 소박하고 통속적인 소재를 빌어 生의 욕망과 숭고를 노래한다. 한줌 씨를 흩뿌리면 그대로 땅 위에 솟아나, 한여름 뜨거운 해를 머리에 진 채 이글거리다 이내 무너지듯 사그라지고 마는 맨드라미의 성장과 소멸을 화폭에 옮겨낸 김지원의 화면은 단순한 외관의 묘사를 넘어, 생의 희로애락을 극적으로 그려낸 추상에 도리어 가깝다.
관객이 마주하는 캔버스는 어떤 형상의 인식에 앞서 강렬하고 섬세한 붓 터치, 거침없이 그어 내린 날 선 자욱들, 수없이 뒤엉킨 색과 면들을 먼저 드러낸다. 그리고 그 사이로 피어오른 붉은 맨드라미가 흐드러진 공간 속에서 관객들은 충만한 회화적 에너지와 시각적 황홀경을 만끽할 수 있을 것이다.
김지원은 인하대학교 미술교육학과와 독일 프랑크푸르트 국립 조형미술학교를 졸업하고 현재 한국예술종합학교 조형예술학과 교수로 재직 중이다. 제15회 이인성 미술상을 수상하였으며 금호미술관, 대구미술관, 서울시립미술관, 토탈미술관, 일민미술관, 아트선재미술관, 베이징 얀황예술관 등 국내외 유수의 미술관에서 개인전 및 단체전에 참여하였다. 작가의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 삼성미술관 리움, 아트선재센터 등에 소장되어 있다.

PKM Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Kim Jiwon(b.1961) from May 20th until June 25th, 2016. The exhibition showcases many of the artist’s beautiful artworks from his large paintings to various drawings that are sure to impress the audience with his deep and mature artistry. In particular, this exhibition focuses on the series of “Cockscomb flower” paintings which has been the artist’s mainstay study for over fifteen years, of which his newest twenty-six such paintings have been selected for this exhibition, enabling all the audience to enjoy his work with a deeper sense of appreciation.
Kim Jiwon has continued his study in observing human desires in artistic ways through his own language of art for the last thirty years which is derived from his inquiry into the nature of “painting” as an artistic endeavor. His works are outcomes of his delving into the subject he has chosen and trying to take the subliminal images that are generated when normalcy and abstract cross each other to the surface.
Of all the many series of works that the artist has done over the years, the “Cockscomb” series is his most prominent depicting both human desires and dignity, yet expressed through representation of such everyday, normal subjects as the Cockscomb, a kind of flower that is very common, but not felt to be especially beautiful. In these works, the artist depicts Cockscombs over their life cycle from germination, through growth to senescence to death, from the very first beginning when a handful of its seeds are spread into the ground, then spurt upward into the air, to take their moment of glory under the blazing sun for a few moments, all too quickly to disappear. Such works are close to abstract paintings, as they dramatically depicts the joy, anger, sorrow, and the pleasure of life itself, even as one would easily see these as a simple depiction of the flower’s exterior.
The canvases on exhibit first reveal strong, and yet sensitive, brush touches, all the sharp-edged marks of rough drawing, and countless tiny mixtures of colors and facets before they coalesce visually into any type of shape more than anything else. The viewers of Kim's works will ultimately fall into that abyss where they are confronted with the space filled with red cockscombs that he has created with his ever fulfilling artistic energy and visual ecstasy.
Kim Jiwon majored in fine arts education at Inha University and in fine art at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stӓdel School, Frankfurt, Germany, and is currently a professor at the School of Visual Arts, Korea National University of Arts. His awards and past exhibitions include the 15th Lee In Sung Art Award and individual and groups art exhibitions at Kumho Museum of Art, Daegu Art Museum, Seoul Museum of Art, Total Museum, Ilmin Museum of Art, Art Sonje Center, and Yanhuang Art Museum, Beijing among other renowned Korean and international venues. His works are included in the collections of numerous art institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, and Art Sonje Center.
