PKM 갤러리는 2017년 10월 27일부터 11월 25일까지 헤르난 바스(Hernan Bas, b.1978) & 정영도(Young Do Jeong, b.1985)의 2인전 《와일드 앤 아웃(Wild n Out)》을 개최한다. 본 전시는 세계 미술계에서 높은 인지도를 갖고 큰 사랑을 받아온 미국 출신의 헤르난 바스와 해외 주요 아트 페어를 통해 미술 관계자들과 컬렉터들에게 부상하고 있는 한국의 신예 작가 정영도의 신작 회화들을 함께 선보이는 뜻깊은 자리이다.
헤르난 바스는 영국의 탐미주의 소설가 오스카 와일드(Oscar Wilde)의 작품을 모티브로 하되 이를 자신만의 예술적 시각을 통해 독창적으로 재해석함으로써, 인간의 여리고 불안한 내면세계를 다층적으로 표현해 왔다. 그의 작품에서 등장하는 묘한 성적 긴장감이 감도는 여린 소년의 이미지와 화면 전체가 압도적이면서도 동서양이 교차된 풍경의 정제된 미감은 대중들로 하여금 개개인 내면 속 숨겨진 낭만적 판타지와 욕망을 상기시킨다. 이번 전시에서는 포비즘 화가 앙리 마티스(Henri Matisse, 1869-1954)의 작품에서 영감을 받아 작업한 몽환적인 느낌의 신작들을 소개 할 예정이다.
본 전시에 소개되는 정영도 작가의 <플라스틱 프로이트(Plastic Freud)> 시리즈와 헤르난 바스의 감각적인 <Bathers> 시리즈를 통해 인간의 내면을 섬세하면서도 아름답게 녹여낸 두 아티스트의 독창적인 예술세계의 공통분모를 경험할 수 있는 자리가 될 것이다.
- 헤르난 바스(Hernan Bas, b.1978): 마이애미 출신의 쿠바계 미국인 아티스트로 문학적 호기심과 허무주의적 낭만주의(Nihilistic Romanticism)와 구시대의 상상적 색채를 띤 이미지로부터 영감을 받아 작업한다. 19세기 유럽의 탐미주의(Aestheticism)와 데카당스(Decadance)의 경향을 띤 오스카 와일드(Oscar Wilde), 조리스-카를 위스망스(Joris-Karl Huysmans)의 문예를 모티브를 삼아 그의 작업은 고전적이면서도 낭만적인 미술사 및 문학적 근원들을 그만의 예술적 시각으로 재해석함으로써 변화와 불안이 공존하는 현대 시대의 인간의 내밀하고 여린 감성을 그려낸다.
바스는 세계적인 컬렉터 루벨 부부에 의해 일찍이 재능을 인정받아 휘트니 미술관(Whitney Museum of American Art), 브루클린 미술관(Brooklyn Museum of Art) 등 전 세계 굴지의 미술관과 갤러리에서 전시를 개최하였으며, 그의 작품은 루벨가 컬렉션(Rubell Family Collection), 뉴욕 현대 미술관(MoMA), 휘트니 미술관(Whitney Museum of American Art), 허시혼 미술관(Hirshhorn Museum), 샌프란시스코 현대 미술관(SF MoMA), LA 현대 미술관(LA MoCA)등에 소장되어 있다. 작가는 현재 디트로이트와 마이애미에서 거주하며 작업 중이며, 이번 전시는 2012년 PKM 갤러리 개인전 이후 PKM 갤러리에 참여하는 두번째 전시이다.
- 정영도(Young Do Jeong, b.1985): 로드아일랜드 스쿨오브디자인(Rhode Island School of Design)과 템플대학교 타일러 스쿨오브아트(Temple University Tyler School of Art)에서 회화전공으로 학사 및 석사학위를 취득하였다. 삶에서 경험하는 개개인의 상실감과 고통, 오해 등 인간의 내면 정서에 주목하는 작가는 제도와 문화를 뛰어넘는 서로의 내밀한 소통을 희망하면서 은유적이고도 직설적인 회화를 제시한다. 아크릴과 오일, 잉크, 스프레이, 색연필, 흑연 등 다양한 재료를 사용하는 정영도의 작업은 추상과 구상의 경계를 가로지르며 긴장감 있는 화면을 연출한다. 정영도의 대담한 터치와 풍부한 색채는 미술 관계자와 아트 바젤 스위스 및 홍콩 등 해외 주요 아트페어에서 컬렉터들로부터 큰 주목을 끌고 있다.

PKM Gallery is pleased to present “Wild n Out”, a painting show featuring two contemporary artists
Hernan Bas (b. 1978- ) and Young Do Jeong (b. 1985- ) from October 27 to November 25, 2017. This exhibition combines the works of Hernan Bas, an internationally renowned American painter, and the works of Young Do Jeong, a rising young Korean painter who is highly appreciated in today’s art scene around the world.
Influenced by the writers of the 19th century Decadent Movement, in particular Oscar Wilde, Bas’s works weave together stories of adolescent adventures and the paranormal with classical poetry, religious stories, mythology and literature. Often tinged with nihilistic romanticism with veiled expressions of homoerotic tension between the adolescent figures situated in lush landscapes, his paintings seem to evoke the hidden desires and fantasies of the viewer. For his new series of paintings, the artist was inspired by ‘Bathers by a River’ by the eminent French Fauvist Henri Matisse (b. 1869 - d. 1954).
Young Do Jeong depicts the complex inner world of his subconscious derived from his personal experiences while growing up in two different cultures of the East and the West. Metaphorical yet filled with pure aesthetic beauty, his works subtly reveal the latent inner worlds and desires that one might have subconsciously contained. With images that traverse the boundaries of the abstract and the figurative, achieved with bold brushwork in multifarious color palettes using various painting materials including acrylic, oil, ink, spray, color pencil and graphite, the artist creates a fantastical atmosphere on his canvas.
A two-man show exclusively designed to showcase the new paintings of each artist - Young Do Jeong with his consecutive series of new works from his ‘Plastic Freud’ series, along with the new paintings of the ‘Bathers’ series of Bas - this exhibition invites the audience to experience the two sensual yet wild and trouble-free worlds created by these gifted artists.
- Born in 1978 in Miami, FL, Hernan Bas’s works have been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions around the world. His work is part of the permanent collections of New York’s Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (LA MoCA), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SF MoMA), among others. The artist lives and works in Detroit, MI and Miami, FL.
- Born in 1985 in Korea, Young Do Jeong received his B.F.A in Painting at Rhode Island School of Design (Providence, RI), and M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing at Tyler School of Art of Temple University (Philadelphia, PA). The artist’s work has been introduced in gallery exhibitions and major international art fairs, including Art Basel, Hong Kong, Art Basel, Basel, and Fiac (Foire international d’art contemporain), Paris. The artist lives and works in Seoul.
