P K M 갤러리는 2013년 8월 16일부터 9월 13일까지 현재 가장 주목받고 있는 현대미술 작가 중 한 명인 구동희(b.1974)의 개인전 Donghee Koo: Extra Stimuli 를 개최한다. 본 전시에 작가는 레디메이드 오브제를 조각적으로 재구성한 설치작품에 사운드를 결합시킴으로써 시각과 청각 등 감각의 교차과정에 관객들을 참여시키고, 이를 유희의 개념으로 풀어낸 신작들을 선보인다. 일상 속에서 흔히 접할 수 있는 익숙한 사운드를 재생시키고, 그것이 연상시킬 수 있는 이미지 대신 개연성 없는 오브제를 제시하는 구동희는 사운드와 이미지의 관습적 의미관계에 대하여 탐구하고, 이를 방해하여 관람객의 해석을 모호하게 한다.
홍익대학교에서 조소를 전공하고 이후 예일대학교에서 수학한 구동희는 2000년대 초반부터 싱글채널비디오 작업으로 이름을 알리기 시작하였으며, 점차 사진과 조각, 설치작업 등으로 작업의 영역을 넓혀왔다. 아뜰리에 에르메스와 아라리오갤러리, 두산갤러리에서 개인전을 개최하였으며, 2010년 두산연강예술상과 2012년 에르메스재단 미술상을 수상하였다. 이외에도 삼성 플라토, 서울시립미술관, 도쿄 국립사진미술관, 백남준아트센터 등 세계 유수의 미술기관에서 그룹전을 가졌고, 그녀의 작품은 파리 퐁피두센터와 이탈리아 산드레토 레 레바우덴고 재단(Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo), 경기도미술관에 작품이 소장되어 있다.

PKM Gallery is pleased to present Donghee Koo: Extra Stimuli from August 16th to September 13th, 2013. One of today’s most acclaimed contemporary artists, Donghee Koo’s recent work combines sounds with sculptural reconstructions of ready-mades. Her playful work invites the viewer to the crossing point between the visual, aural, as well as other senses. By regenerating familiar everyday sounds matched with irrelevant objects, Koo interferes with the conventional semantic relations between sounds and images in order to disrupt the viewer's expected interpretation.
Donghee Koo has BFA in Sculpture from Hongik University and MFA in Sculpture from Yale University. She began to receive recognition in early 2000s through her video works, and later her photographs, sculptures, and installation works also gained international acclaim. Koo has held solo exhibitions at Atelier Hermes, Arario Gallery and Doosan Gallery in Korea, and received Doosan Artist Award in 2010 and Hermes Foundation Art Award in 2012. Koo has also shown her work through group exhibitions at various prominent art institutions around the world, including PLATEAU, Seoul Museum of Art, National Museum of Photography, Tokyo, and Nam June Paik Art Center, etc. Her works are in major collections through the world including Centre Pompidou, France, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Italy, and Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Korea.
