조각가 정현(b.1956)은 침목, 고철, 잡석, 콜타르 등 용도를 다하고 버려진 소재들로 인간 형상을 조형하며, 시간을 초월한 인간의 정신성과 에너지를 탐구해왔다. 그는 재료에 최소한도로 개입하여 물성 자체를 극대화하고, 이에 내포된 시간성과 기억, 역사에 관한 논의를 이끌어낸다. 정현은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립 남서울미술관, 금호미술관, 김종영미술관, 파리 팔레 루아얄 정원, 베이징 금일미술관 등에서 열린 20여 회의 개인전을 포함, 국내외 유수 미술 기관에서 전시를 다수 개최했다. 제28회 김세중조각상(2014), 제1회 한국미술평론가협회상 창작부문 대상(2009), 국립현대미술관 올해의 작가상(2006), 김종영미술관 오늘의 작가상(2004)을 수상한 바 있다. 현재 국립현대미술관, 부산시립미술관, 경기도미술관, 서울대미술관 등에 그의 작품이 소장되어 있다.
Chung Hyun explores the human form through discarded materials such as railway sleepers, metal, rubble, and coal tar. By utilizing these materials, he investigates the timeless nature of the human spirit and energy. Through minimal intervention, he maximizes their inherent qualities and stimulates discussions about time, memory, and history. Chung has held over 20 solo exhibitions, including those at the National Museum of Modern Art (Gwacheon, Korea), Nam-Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Kumho Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Kim Chong Yung Museum (Seoul, Korea), Jardin du Palais Royal (Paris, France), and Today Art Museum (Beijing, China). He has also exhibited extensively in prestigious art institutions both in Korea and internationally. Chung has received several awards, including the Kim Sechoong Sculpture Award from the Kim Sechoong Memorial Association (2014), the AICA Korea Award from the Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art Korea (2009), Artist of the Year 2006 from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (2006), and Artist Today 2004 from the Kim Chong Yung Museum (2004). His works are currently held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Busan Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, and Seoul National University Museum of Art, among others.
