PKM 갤러리는 한국 ‘단색화’의 거장 윤형근(Yun Hyong-keun, 1928-2007) 화백의 작고 10 주년을 맞아 2017년 12월 1일부터 2018년 1월 6일까지 작품전을 개최한다. 이번 전시에는 70-80년대 제작된 닥지 작업들 중 엄선된 미공개 작품 15점이 발표된다.
윤 화백은 세계 미술계에서 크게 주목받고 있는 단색화의 대표주자이다. 지난 1 월 세계 최정상급 갤러리인 뉴욕 데이빗 즈워너 갤러리 초대 개인전에서 작품이 모두 판매되는 성공적인 결과를 얻은 것과 더불어 내년 8월부터 12월까지 국립현대미술관 서울관에서 대규모 개인전 개최가 확정되는 등 윤 화백의 작품은 국내외 미술계의 뜨거운 관심을 불러 모으고 있으며 그에 대한 평가는 날로 높아져가고 있다.
이번 PKM+ 공간의 전시를 통해 소개되는 윤 화백의 닥지 작품들은 작가가 주로 사용했던 코튼이나 린넨이 아닌 우리 고유의 닥지 위에 유화 물감으로 깊은 수묵향이 느껴지는 붓질을 행하고 대담한 공간 분할에 의한 여백의 미가 종이의 질감과 함께 조화롭게 구사됨으로써 회화적 우아함의 극치를 보여준다.
생전의 윤형근 화백은 자신의 닥지 작업이 캔버스 회화의 하위 개념으로서의 종이 작업이 아니라, 자신이 구현하고자 한 깊은 묵향이 느껴지는 절제된 숭고 미와 공간감을 우리 고유의 전통 재료인 닥지를 사용함으로써 보다 직접적으로 표현하고자 했던 회화적 실험의 독립적 결과물이라 스스로 평가한 바 있다.
이번 전시를 통해 관람객들은 윤형근 화백이 작가로서 고유한 회화적 스타일을 정립했던 주요 시기인 70-80 년대의 보석 같은 닥지 작품들을 만날 수 있을 것이다.

PKM Gallery is pleased to present “Oil on Hanji 1973 – 1989”, a solo exhibition of the Korean Dansaekhwa painter Yun Hyong-keun (b. 1928 – d. 2007) from December 1st, 2017 to January 6th, 2018. An exhibition exclusively organized to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the artist’s passing in 2007, this exhibition showcases Yun’s unprecedented selection of fifteen hanji works that span his artistic practice between the years of 1973 to 1989.
Yun is often considered to be one of the most celebrated Korean Dansaekhwa artists in the global art world today. Most recently in January 2017, Yun’s solo exhibition at the prestigious David Zwirner Gallery in New York ended in great success. In addition to this, a major retrospective exhibition of the artist has been confirmed to take place next year at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul, which will run through August to December 2018. Such cases indicate Yun’s growing stature as one of the most significant figures that represent Korean Dansaekhwa both locally and internationally.
On view at the exhibition space of PKM+, Yun’s hanji series illustrate the ultimate elegance of Korean artistic beauty. With his bold division of space on hanji while filling up the composition with calligraphic brushwork using oil pigment that resembles the medium of traditional Korean ink, Yun’s exquisite artistic productions reveal the distinctive yet authentic nature of hanji.
Yun considered hanji, the traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees, as a unique medium that distinguishes itself from raw canvas, cotton or linen, and not as a subordinate medium to replace them. The artist strongly believed that this was the most pertinent method of which he could truly express his inherent artistry to visualize the sublime beauty of Korean art. This was part of his self-developed artistic experimentation as a way to materialize the essence of what is defined today as ‘Dansaekhwa’.
This exhibition provides an invaluable opportunity to experience Yun’s important hanji works from the periods of the 1970s to the 1980s, of which the artist had successfully established his own signature style.
