PKM 갤러리는 2015년 10월 7일부터 11월 8일까지 영국 현대 미술의 새로운 흐름을 보여주는 토비 지글러(Toby Ziegler, b.1972)의 국내 최초 개인전을 개최한다. 본 전시에서는 작가의 대규모 회화 및 조각 등, 총 10여 점의 신작이 선보일 예정이다.
르네상스 시대 전후의 역사적 예술품을 작품의 모티브로 삼는 토비 지글러는 3D 디지털 프로그램을 이용하여 대상을 해체 혹은 생략 후 재해석하는 과정 가운데 드러나는 추상적 형상들을 빌어 자신만의 독특한 시각 언어를 구축하여 왔다. 작가는 조각뿐만 아니라 회화 작업에서도 알루미늄을 사용하며, 캔버스 대신 알루미늄 표면 위에 페인트를 얇게 입히고 전기 사포로 갈아낸 다음 그 위로 다시 칠을 하는 일련의 과정들을 통해 작품을 완성한다.
국내 첫 개인전에서 선보이는 토비 지글러의 회화 신작들은 18세기 영국 풍경 화가인 토마스 게인즈버러(Thomas Gainsborough)의 <저녁 풍경-농부들과 말을 탄 사람들(Evening Landscape–Peasants and Mounted Figures)>(1768-1771)로부터 영감을 받은 것으로, 작가는 로코코 양식의 서정적인 풍경화를 3D 컴퓨터 프로그램을 바탕으로 추상 및 단순화하여 세련되고 현대적인 회화 작업들로 재탄생시켰다. 컴퓨터의 정교함과 유려한 손맛이 더해진 작가의 화면은 빛의 밝기와 시점에 따라 색(色)의 깊이와 형(形)의 경계가 끊임없이 변화하며 신비로운 깊이감과 더불어 생동감이 넘치는 우아한 매력을 표출한다.
삼각의 면들이 이웃하여 하나의 형상을 이루고 있는 토비 지글러의 조각 역시 회화 작품들과 작업 방식을 같이한다. 기존의 형상을 컴퓨터 프로그램을 통해 변환 후 새롭게 파생된 형태를 바탕으로 산화된 알루미늄 재질의 삼각 면들을 균정(均整)하게 조합한 조각 작품들은 형상과 추상, 원본과 차용, 고전적 구성과 디지털 변형이라는 경계와 차이의 틈을 유연하게 오가며 그만의 독특한 예술적 정체성을 드러낸다.
영국 런던에서 활발히 활동 중인 토비 지글러는 런던의 센트럴 세인트 마틴스 예술 대학(Central St. Martin’s School of Art)을 졸업하고 헬싱키 키아즈마 현대 미술관(Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma), 비엔나의 벨베데레 미술관(Belvedere Museum), 상하이의 민생 미술관(Minsheng Art Museum), 뒤셀도르프의 쿤스트할레 뒤셀로드프(Kunsthalle Düsseldorf), 런던의 테이트 브리튼(Tate Britain), 프랑스 디종의 르 콩소르시엉(Le Consortium) 등 전 세계 미술관에서 개인전과 그룹전을 개최한 바 있다. 작가의 작품은 현재 잉글랜드 예술위원회(Arts Council of England), 버밍엄 박물관 및 미술관(Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery), 테이트 갤러리(Tate Gallery) 등 전 세계 유수의 예술 기관과 미술관에 소장되어 있다.
작가는 이번 개인전을 위해 특별히 내한할 예정이다.
PKM Gallery is honored to present the first solo exhibition in Korea by the representative British artist Toby Ziegler (b. 1972) from October 7th to November 8th, 2015. The exhibition displays approximately 10 recent works by Ziegler, including his large scale paintings and sculptures.
Inspired by historical works of Renaissance Age, Ziegler’s unique abstract forms deconstruct, erase and reconstruct his subject through a 3D digital program. Ziegler uses aluminum not only in his sculptures but also in his paintings, where thin coats of paint are repeatedly applied and sanded down with an electric sander on the surface of aluminum instead of canvas.
Ziegler’s recent paintings presented in this exhibition are adapted from Evening Landscape-Peasants and Mounted Figures (1768-1771) by the 18th Century British landscape artist Thomas Gainsborough. Ziegler transforms the Rococo-style lyrical landscape of the original painting into sophisticated abstract contemporary painting through a computer program. An integration of the precision of the computer and dexterity of hand technique, Ziegler’s paintings emanate magical charm and enchantment filled with vigor, demonstrating an endless transformation of the depth in color and form according to the intensity and placement of light.
Ziegler’s sculpture in which three planes border with each other to create one form also shares a similar method as his paintings. Transforming and reconstructing original form through a computer program, his sculpture brings together the triangular aluminum planes in symmetry, traversing the boundaries between the ideas of figurative and abstract, original and appropriation, classic composition and digital modification.
Living and working in London, UK, Toby Ziegler graduated from Central St. Martin’s School of Art, and has held solo and group exhibitions in major art institutions worldwide, including Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki, Belvedere Museum, Vienna, Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf, Tate Britain, London, and Le Consortium, Dijon, France. Ziegler’s art is in major collections in the world, including Arts Council England, Birmigham Museum of Art Gallery, and Tate Gallery.
Ziegler will be visiting Korea for this special exhibition.
