PKM Gallery | Bartleby Bickle & Meursault are pleased to present a solo exhibition of new and recent work by Katie Paterson (b. 1981), one of the most acclaimed young artists to emerge from Britain in recent years. This is the artist’s first exhibition in Asia.
Recently named by the Observer of London as one of four “Best New Artists in Britain,” Katie Paterson first came to public attention with a solo show at Modern Art Oxford in 2008, just a year after graduating from the Slade School of Fine Art, London.
That show featured Vatnajökull (the sound of), which connected a microphone embedded in an Icelandic glacier to audio equipment and a mobile phone line, allowing callers from anywhere in the world to listen in real time to the slow melting of the glacier. It was shown with another work that was equally cogent in its conceptual basis yet deeply poetic in effect, Earth-Moon-Earth (Moonlight Sonata Reflected from the Surface of the Moon). Taking Beethoven’s familiar notes and transcribing them into Morse codes that were sent via radio waves to bounce off the moon, Paterson ended up with returning signals that were degraded by the cratered lunar surface in random yet subtly haunting ways—a Moonlight Sonata altered and reconstituted by the moon itself.
Both works are included in the present exhibition, adapted by the artist to our gallery setting. Other works in the show are also representative of Paterson’s research-based, multidisciplinary practice, which engages with ideas of nature, environment, and the cosmos in ways that are at once poetic, scientific, and philosophical. Though coolly minimalist and understated in their presentation, her works are often the result of long, intensive research and collaboration with specialists in various technological expertise.
Light Bulb to Simulate Moonlight, for instance, is a set of incandescent bulbs developed in cooperation with OSRAM to transmit light with wavelengths identical to those of moonlight. And History of Darkness is a slide archive of darkness, spanning billions of years, captured at different times and places throughout the universe—an ongoing life-long project that compiles images and information gathered by astronomical observatories. Similarly, in making The Dying Star Letters, Paterson relies on technical notifications of gamma-ray bursts, indicative of stellar deaths, sent out by astronomers and cosmologists. Upon receiving such notification, Paterson hand-writes and posts a brief letter announcing the star’s death—a characteristically spare yet intimate gesture which collapses the distance between her audience and the most distant edges of the cosmos.
Born in 1981 in Glasgow, Katie Paterson received her BA from Edinburgh College of Art in 2004 and her MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art, London, in 2007. She has exhibited in solo shows at James Cohan Gallery, New York (2011); Modern Art Oxford, Oxford (2008); Albion Gallery, London (2008); and Matthew Bown Gallery, London (2007). She has also been selected for inclusion in important international group shows such as “Space. About a Dream,” Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2011); “Cage Mix: Sculpture & Sound,” BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK (2010); “Lifeforms,” Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm (2009); Performa 09, New York (2009); “Universal Code,” The Power Plant, Toronto (2009); and “Altermodern: Tate Triennial,” Tate Britain, London (2009).
Katie Paterson holds a John Florent Stone Fellowship at Edinburgh College of Art and is the Leverhulme Artist in Residence in the Astrophysics Group at the University College London. In 2008, she was awarded the first annual Creative 30 Award, created by Volvo to recognize Britain’s brightest young talent across various creative fields, including art, design, fashion, and music. Katie Paterson currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

최근 런던 Observer지에 의해 “영국 최고의 신인 아티스트(Best New Artists in Britain)” 네 명 중 한 명으로 선정된 케이티 패터슨은 2008년 모던 아트 옥스퍼드(Modern Art Oxford)에서 열린 개인전에서 처음으로 대중적인 관심을 받기 시작했다. 그것은 그녀가 런던 슬레이드 파인 아트 스쿨(Slade School of Fine Art, London)을 졸업한 지 일 년 만에 이루어진 일이다.
그 전시에서 보여진 작품 <Vatnajökull(the sound of)>는 아이슬란드 빙하에 묻어놓은 마이크로폰을 오디오 장치와 모바일폰 선에 연결시켜 발신자가 세계 어느 곳에 있든 실시간으로 그 빙하의 느리게 녹아가는 소리를 들을 수 있도록 하였다. 이 작품은 개념적인 면에서 매우 충실하면서 동시에 시적인 인상을 주는 또 다른 작품, <Earth-Moon-Earth (Moonlight Sonata Reflected from the Surface of the Moon)>과 함께 전시되었다. 패터슨은 베토벤의 익숙한 악보를 모스 부호로 바꾼 뒤 라디오 웨이브 방식으로 그 부호들이 달에 부딪혀 반사되도록 한다. 이렇게 임의적이지만 섬세하고 잊히지 않는 방법을 통해 분화구로 덮인 달 표면에 의해 분해되어서 돌아오는 신호들을 얻게 된다. 달 자체에 의해 변경되고 재구성된 월광 소나타인 셈이다.
두 작품 모두 갤러리 공간에 맞게 작가의 조정을 거쳐 이번 전시에 포함되었다. 다른 작품들 역시 패터슨의 대표작으로서 리서치를 바탕으로 한, 시적이면서도 과학적이고 철학적인 방식으로 자연, 환경, 우주에 대한 생각과 관련된 여러 전문분야의 실행들이 바탕이 된 대표작들이다. 재현에 있어 감정을 많이 드러내지 않으며 표현을 아끼는 것과는 달리 그녀의 작품은 다양한 기술 전문가들과 오랜 기간 동안 집중적으로 연구하고 협력한 결과물이다.
예를 들어, <Light Bulb to Simulate Moonlight>는 달빛과 동일한 파장을 가진 전구를 만들기 위해 오 스람(OSRAM)과 협력하여 개발한 백열전구 한 세트로 이루어졌다. 그리고 <History of Darkness>는 우주 전체의 각기 다른 시간과 장소에서 포착된 어두움에 대한 십억 년에 걸친 슬라이드 아카이브이다. 이것은 천문대에서 모은 이미지와 정보를 따라 일생을 걸쳐 계속해서 진행될 장기 프로젝트이다. 다른 작업들에서와 마찬가지로 <The Dying Star Letters>를 작업하면서도 패터슨은 천문학자들과 우주학자들이 보내오는 감마 광선 파열, 별의 죽음을 알리는 현상에 대한 기술적인 통지들을 참고하였다. 패터슨은 그 통지들을 받은 뒤에 별의 죽음을 발표하는 간단한 친필 편지를 부친다. 관람객과 먼 우주 끝 사이의 거리를 무너뜨리는, 그녀의 다른 작업들이 그러하듯이, 절제되어 있지만 친밀한 표현이다.

케이티 패터슨은 에든버러 칼리지 오브 아트(Edinburgh College of Art)의 존 플로런트 스톤 펠로우(John Florent Stone Fellow)이며, 런던대학교(University College London) 천체물리학 그룹의 레지던스 작가이다. 다양하고 창의적인 분야들, 아트를 포함한 디자인, 패션, 음악 등의 분야에서 영국의 재능 있는 젊은 작가를 뽑기 위해 볼보(Volvo)에서 매년 주최하는 크리에이티브 30 어워드(Creative 30 Award)의 2008년 1회 수상자이다. 케이티 패터슨은 현재 독일 베를린에 거주하며 작업 중이다.
