From ancient times, art creation has been centered around two-dimensional pictorial space and three-dimensional sculptural space, but creative artists have also constantly traversed these two visual fields, seeking inspiration and opportunities to expand their artistic language. Thus Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel murals have been related to his powerful sculptures, and marvelous paintings and statues together shape a Dunhuang cave-temple. Such practices demonstrate that the forms and concepts of 2D and 3D are perpetually interdependent and interpenetrating in art history.

PKM Gallery is proud to present "2D/3D: Negotiating Visual Languages," its first group show of Chinese contemporary art curated by Wu Hung that explores these very themes. Stimulated by new visual techniques such as photography, video, installation, and multi-media art, contemporary artists have become more accustomed to create works in versatile forms, yet 2D and 3D remains the two basic operative grounds for visual art, and their relationship in contemporary art has not been seriously discussed.

"2D/3D" aims to foreground this important practical and theoretical problem by presenting twelve contemporary Chinese artists, whose innovative works obscure the boundaries between traditional mediums of art. The exhibition features a diverse group of both emerging and established artists, including Hung Shaopei, a young Taiwanese artist who stretches the definition of painting to its limits by creating paint "sculptures" on canvas, while Shen Shaomin's Mona Lisa transforms the famed portrait into a unique sculpture form. Miao Xiaochun's work is also inspired by the classics with his immense painting screen which is a digital reinterpretation of a Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights. Hong Lei's photography installation on the second floor turns photography into a three-dimensional experience by exposing the inner workings of the fundamental technology behind the medium. Through his experimentation in various textures, Shang Yang adds a three dimensional element to his paintings, while Shi Jinsong's floating tree installation reduces a massive tree to its two dimensional single plane essence. Xia Xiaowan and Shen Ruijun's works combine the aesthetics of traditional Chinese paintings with an innovative 3D style overlapping multiple layers of images. The interdependency between these two modes of visual representation is illustrated in the works of Li Songsong and Laurens Tan through their ease of movement and fluidity between painting and sculpture and video and sculpture respectively. Similarly, Jiang Zhi and Qiu Zhijie, who are known for their photography, will feature new sculptures and paintings in this exhibition, showcasing their versatile artistic creativity.
The works chosen for the exhibition will demonstrate different kinds of artistic creativities involved in developing this formal dialogue. Because of the seminal roles of painting and sculpture in defining 2D and 3D representations, the exhibition will privilege these two art forms, while also featuring some works in other mediums.

The Garden of Earthly Delights进行了数码化的重新诠释。
